Commercial Church Floor Sanding: Surrey & London

Commercial Floors London
Restored aged-oak herringbone parquet floor down the nave of a traditional church

Church floors are some of the most rewarding timber we work on. They are old, often original, and have carried congregations for a century or more. Across Surrey and London we sand and restore nave floors, chancels, vestries, choir areas, pew platforms and the church halls that serve the wider community through the week. Here is how we approach them.

Why church floors need a specialist

A church floor is not a domestic living room scaled up. The timber is usually old pine or oak, the boards are wide and worn unevenly, and there are pews, steps, raised platforms and tricky stone-to-timber edges to work around. Many churches are listed or carry real heritage value, so the work has to be sympathetic to the building.

  • Care with original timber. Old boards are thinner than modern ones. We sand only as much as is needed to lift the floor, never more, so there is plenty of life left for the future.
  • Dust control that protects the building. Organ pipes, panelling, memorials and soft furnishings cannot be left coated in dust. Our machines run with high-extraction units and we seal off adjoining areas.
  • Working around the diary. Churches have a fixed calendar of services, weddings and funerals. We plan the work around it and can run midweek or over a longer quiet window.
  • A finish that suits the space. A hard-wearing matte oil or lacquer that copes with heavy footfall but still looks like natural wood, not a glossy plastic coat.

Our process

The same staged sanding process we follow on any heritage timber floor, scaled to the space:

  1. First cut with the belt sander to lift the old finish and level the boards.
  2. Edging around every pew base, step and awkward perimeter.
  3. Finer cuts to remove the earlier scratch pattern and bring the grain back.
  4. Hand scraping into corners and tight angles.
  5. Two or three coats of the chosen finish, denibbed between coats.

We talk through finish options on site and patch test before committing to the final coats, so the church sees exactly how the floor will look.
