Sports flooring is a specialism most general flooring firms do not offer, which is exactly why schools, clubs and leisure centres come to us. A sports hall floor has to do far more than look tidy. It has to grip without burning skin, give underfoot to protect joints, bounce a ball true, and carry several sets of line markings without becoming a confusing mess. Here is how it works.
Indoor sports surfaces
Indoor sports floors fall into three broad families, and the right one depends on what the space is used for.
Timber sprung floors are the classic choice for halls used heavily for basketball, netball and indoor sport. A sprung subframe gives controlled flex that protects players and gives the surface a lively, consistent ball bounce. They look superb and, maintained well, last for decades.
Cushioned vinyl and polyurethane systems offer area-elastic or point-elastic give in a hard-wearing, lower-maintenance package. They are a strong fit for multi-use halls that double as exam venues, assembly spaces and community lettings, where the floor needs to take chairs, staging and trolleys as well as sport.
Resin and seamless systems suit specific uses and back-of-house areas. We help you match the system to how the hall actually earns its keep, not just what it is called in the brochure.
Line markings and multi-use courts
Most halls are not single-sport. A school hall might need basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball, indoor football and short tennis all on one floor. The art is in laying those markings so each sport is readable without the floor looking like a plate of spaghetti.
We use a clear colour system, with each sport given its own colour and line weight, set out to the correct court dimensions for its governing body. Markings are applied with hard-wearing paints designed for sports surfaces, so they survive constant play and cleaning. If a court needs adding or a worn set refreshing, we can remark without redoing the whole floor.
Maintenance
A sports floor is an asset worth protecting. A few habits keep it performing and safe:
- Use the right cleaning method for the surface, as the wrong cleaner can leave a slippery film or dull the finish.
- Keep grit out with good entrance matting, because abrasive dirt is what wears a surface fastest.
- Use proper protection boards when the hall is set up for exams, events or staging.
- Book periodic deep cleans and, for timber, a recoat when the finish starts to wear.
Looked after properly, a quality sports floor stays grippy, true and safe for years, and remarking keeps it current as needs change.
