Playground safety surfacing exists for one reason: to soften the fall when a child comes off a piece of equipment. The surface is built to a tested critical fall height, so the cushioning is matched to how high children can climb above it. Get the depth right and a fall that could cause a serious injury onto hard ground becomes a knock the child shrugs off, which is why specification matters as much as the surface itself.
There are several systems to choose from. Wetpour gives a smooth, seamless rubber finish that can be coloured and patterned for games, markings and number trails, and its flat surface suits buggies and wheelchairs. Rubber mulch offers a more natural, bonded look that blends into parks and landscaped areas. Grass mats reinforce existing turf while still letting it grow through. All of them are porous, so rainwater drains through rather than pooling, and all offer good slip resistance in the wet.

What is critical fall height and why does it matter?
Critical fall height is the maximum height from which a child could fall onto a surface without an unacceptable risk of serious head injury. Playground safety surfacing is tested to a critical fall height, and the cushioning depth is matched to how high children can climb on the equipment above it. We specify the surface and its thickness around the fall height of your equipment, so the protection suits the way the area will be used.
What is the difference between wetpour and rubber mulch?
Wetpour is a smooth, seamless rubber surface laid in two layers, which can be coloured and patterned for games, markings and designs, and gives a flat, wheelchair- and buggy-friendly finish. Rubber mulch is shredded rubber bonded in place for a more natural, bark-like look that blends into landscaped and park settings. Both absorb impact and drain well; the right choice comes down to the look you want and how the area is used.
Is playground surfacing slip resistant and does it drain?
Yes. Properly specified wetpour and bonded rubber surfaces offer good slip resistance even in the wet, and because they are porous they let rainwater drain straight through rather than pooling. We prepare the base so it drains correctly underneath, which keeps the play area usable in more weather and helps the surface last.
