Timber sports hall floor in a London leisure centre

A wooden sports hall floor takes a relentless beating. Years of footfall, scuffing trainers, dragged equipment, dropped weights and the odd spill wear down the protective coating until the surface looks dull, plays inconsistently and, worst of all, turns slippery. Sports hall floor restoration solves that without the cost and disruption of a full replacement. By sanding back the old, worn seal to bare timber, repairing any damage and applying a fresh anti-slip polyurethane sports seal, we restore the correct grip, friction and appearance the floor was built to have. It is the difference between a floor you worry about and one your teams can play on with confidence.

We work on every kind of timber sports floor: sprung floors, solid timber and engineered sports floors, pine and maple, and the common branded systems such as Junckers and Granwood. Each has its own build-up and recommended finish, so wooden sports floor refinishing is never one size fits all. We identify exactly what you have, assess the wear and slip resistance on site, and specify the right sanding, repair and sealing approach to suit it. That is what separates a proper sports floor restoration from simply painting over a problem.

A full restoration covers far more than a coat of lacquer. We handle gap filling, board repairs and water damage repair, fix lifted boards and creaks, and put right slippery or worn floors. Once the floor is sanded and sealed, we re-mark court lines so the markings wear with the surface rather than peeling away. Where a floor is not yet ready for a full sand, sports floor maintenance such as a deep clean and recoat, or a strip and reseal, keeps it protected and extends the years between full restorations. It is all supply-and-fit under one fair, transparent written quote, timed around your fixtures so the floor is ready when you need it. For brand-new installs and fresh line marking instead of restoration, our sports flooring service covers all surface types.

What restoration covers

The work behind a restored sports floor.

Sanding back to bare timber

We sand off the old, worn coating and any surface damage, taking the floor back to clean, level timber ready to reseal.

Anti-slip sports seal

A fresh anti-slip polyurethane sports seal restores the correct grip and friction so the surface performs safely for sport.

Court line re-marking

Basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball, five-a-side and multi-use lines set out, re-marked and sealed in.

Board repairs & gap filling

Split, lifted or worn boards repaired or replaced, gaps filled and creaks fixed before the floor is resealed.

Fixing slippery floors

Glazed, residue-laden or worn surfaces stripped and resealed to bring slip resistance back to a safe, playable level.

Deep clean & recoat

Where a full sand is not yet due, a deep clean and recoat or strip and reseal protects the floor and extends its life.

How it works

From survey to fully cured floor.

  • Survey and assessment. We identify the floor type, check wear, slip resistance and any damage, then recommend a full sand or a deep clean and recoat.
  • Clear written quote. Supply and fit in one fair price, with the works and timings agreed around your fixtures and term dates before we start.
  • Sanding and repairs. The floor is sanded back to bare timber, with board repairs, gap filling and water damage repair carried out as needed.
  • Seal, re-mark and cure. An anti-slip sports seal is applied, court lines are re-marked and sealed in, then the floor is left to cure before reopening.

Restoration is the cost-effective route when a timber floor still has life in it. Common questions

Sports hall floor sanding FAQs.

How often should a sports hall wood floor be sanded and restored?

It depends on use, but a busy school or leisure-centre sports hall typically benefits from a full sand back and reseal every seven to ten years, with a lighter deep clean and recoat in between to keep the surface protected. A high-traffic gym or multi-use games hall may need attention sooner, while a lightly used church or community hall floor can go longer. The honest answer comes from the floor itself, so we assess wear, slip resistance and the depth of seal left on site, then tell you whether a full restoration or a deep clean and recoat is the right call rather than selling you more work than the floor needs.

Why has our sports hall floor become slippery, and can you fix it?

A sports floor usually turns slippery for one of a few reasons: the anti-slip seal has worn through in the playing areas, the wrong cleaning products have left a residue, or dust and polish build-up has glazed the surface. In most cases yes, we can fix it. Sanding back the worn coating and applying a fresh anti-slip polyurethane sports seal restores the correct grip and friction underfoot, so the floor performs safely for basketball, netball, badminton, five-a-side and indoor sport again. Where a full sand is not yet needed we can sometimes strip and reseal or deep clean and recoat to bring the slip resistance back.

Can you repair damaged sections without replacing the whole floor?

Very often, yes. Localised water damage, impact damage, board splits, lifted or creaking boards and worn patches can usually be repaired by replacing or re-fixing the affected boards and blending the repair into the surrounding floor during sanding and resealing. Replacing whole sections of timber, or the entire floor, is a last resort we only recommend when the damage is too widespread or the subfloor has failed. We will always tell you honestly whether a repair and restoration will get you a sound, safe floor or whether replacement genuinely makes more sense.

Can you re-mark the court lines after sanding?

Yes. Sanding back removes the old court lines, so re-marking is part of a full restoration. We set out and re-mark lines for basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball, five-a-side and multi-use games to the correct dimensions, in the colours you need, and seal over them so they wear with the floor rather than peeling off. If your markings have changed or you want to add a sport, restoration is the ideal time to update the layout.

Do you work in school holidays or out of hours?

Yes, and for sports halls this matters. Sanding and resealing needs the floor out of use while coatings cure, so we plan the work around your timetable, fixtures and term dates. We regularly restore school assembly and sports halls during the summer and half-term holidays, and fit gym and leisure-centre work into quieter periods or out of hours, so the floor is ready and fully cured before you reopen.

Can you restore a sprung, Junckers or Granwood floor?

Yes. We work on sprung floors, solid timber and engineered sports floors, and the common branded systems including Junckers and Granwood, as well as pine and maple floors. Each system has its own build-up and recommended seal, so we identify what you have and sand and refinish it to suit, protecting the sprung structure underneath. If a sprung batten or pad has failed we can address that as part of the works rather than simply coating over a problem.
